Press Release

For Immediate Release

San Antonio, TX (June 20, 2023) – The Board of Directors of ActivateSA is pleased to announce the hire of Joey Pawlik (PAW-vlik) as ActivateSA’s Executive Director.

ActivateSA is a grassroots organization that advocates for a connected active transportation network that is safe, equitable, sustainable, and accessible for all users. ActivateSA envisions a San Antonio region where all residents can safely and comfortably access opportunity and recreation on a transportation system promoting mobility for all abilities.

ActivateSA Board Chair Jim Bailey praises the hire of Mr. Pawlik saying “with his experience in policy making, planning, and engagement, he will level the organization up into our next phase of transportation and transit advocacy and consensus-building to help build an even more connected and efficient active transportation network that serves all San Antonians.”

Joey joins ActivateSA with 7 years of experience in constituent advocacy, community engagement, policy, nonprofit development, and transportation planning. He most recently worked at the Alamo Area MPO and in the office of State Representative Barbara Gervin Hawkins. He is a native San Antonian: bike commuter, transit user, and walker who is passionate about building a safer, more protected, equitable, connected, and comfortable active transportation and transit network across San Antonio for people of all ages and abilities.

The ActivateSA Board of Directors would like to thank two critical partners. First, the 80|20 Foundation for their support which enables ActivateSA to empower San Antonio residents to take an active role in shaping the future of their community. Second, for the members of the San Antonio Complete Streets Coalition and their collective efforts to advance a safer active transportation network for everyone through a soon-to-be-launched Complete Streets Campaign. This campaign will seek to improve and enhance San Antonio’s complete streets policy with a broad coalition of community organizations to make the City’s streets not only safer, but comfortable, equitable, sustainable, and accessible for all users.

Activate SA is focused not only on making it easier and safer to move between places but also advocating for expanded public transit and a more sustainable and inclusive land-use plan that addresses the imperative of more housing for all income levels and anti-displacement protections for low-income communities.

“As one of the original members of the ActivateSA trails planning group, I am incredibly proud of the work our organization has accomplished in helping secure $110 million in funding for greenway trail funding and additional funding for on-street bike and pedestrian infrastructure through the 2022 Bond Program as well as advancing shared streets opportunities during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said ActivateSA Executive Director, Joey Pawlik. “I am even more honored to lead ActivateSA into our next chapter by launching a consensus-building process around the future adoption of a new Complete Streets policy for San Antonio that will result in a  connected, resilient, and equitable transportation network through a shift in street and road design that ensures access to community resources for all, including those who walk, bike, use a wheelchair, use public transportation, or drive.”
